This year, in addition to being able to stroll through the museum in the glow of original Edison & Bergmann electroliers, we’ve added a presentation you won’t want to miss! Interior Design & Edison Experts Rob & Joan Rolfs will be giving a presentation on LIGHTING TRENDS 2023 Hint: They’re similar to Edison & Bergmann’s first electroliers of 1882! Plus, the Rolfs have curated a special exhibit on the very first Christmas lights, which will be on display.
There were only 3 homes in the U.S. that are known to have electric light when Hearthstone’s system was completed on Sept. 30, 1882: the William H. Vanderbilt residence (Jan. 1882), JP Morgan residence (Summer 1882) both in NYC and the John Doan residence (Aug. 1882) in Chicago. Today, only Hearthstone survives. The very first “electroliers,” a term coined by Edison, were designed by Edison & Johann Sigmund Bergmann, a skilled machinist who had a showroom in NYC for these early adopters to “select” the electroliers to be made for their home.
In order to support this local non-profit treasure, any proceeds or amount given after expenses will be donated to Hearthstone for their ongoing restoration efforts.
